Fuzzy Math Is Making Sense to Me

After knitting 1 wrap, 1 baby blanket, and about 50 scarves, I felt ready to advance a level and try to make a sweater. Keep in mind, this isn't even a difficult sweater -- it is a very European looking wrap thing that just happens to have two holes where your arms can go through. I figured this was enough of a baby step that I could still complete the project, but it wouldn't be too difficult. How wrong I was. I have now started this thing five, yes FIVE times and it is still not working. I think I am going to have to go over to my friend Kate's house tomorrow for some one on one tutoring just to get the darn thing started.

But the part that really adds insult to injury is the fact that I got the idea (and the pattern) from the exact same sweater that I saw in our local yarn shop. The owner made up the pattern herself and also sells things in her shop that she makes. Here is where the fuzzy math comes in: one ball of this yarn costs 8.50 euros. The sweater requires 5 balls, for a total of 42.50. And then you have to knit the whole thing yourself! Now guess how much the complete sweater (with no imperfections) is selling for in the yarn shop? 36 euros!!!

Too funny! My mother has the same issue here in the U.S. She loves to knit, but by the time she gets all the materials and takes her time, the stores have it much less expensive!
